September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month. Alabama has one of the highest cervical cancer and ovarian cancer mortality rates, and currently no early detection tests exist for either. The Laura Crandall Brown Foundation in Hoover is known across the country for its cutting-edge research in ovarian cancer early detection, made possible in part by its annual Head Over Teal 5K/10K, which also raises funds for education and financial support for women living with gynecologic cancer and their families.
“Every person who crosses the Head Over Teal finish line is helping move our mission forward,” said Irene Goddard, Development Director for LCBF. “Whether they’re running in honor of someone they love, celebrating survivorship, or simply standing beside women affected by gynecologic cancer, they’re making a meaningful difference.”
The Head Over Teal race will feature live music, breakfast and lunch refreshments, community partner booths, children’s activities and family-friendly entertainment. Winners of the race will receive Trak Shak gift cards.
Hoover Choir Boosters: Melody Miles 5K and Fun Run

The Melody Miles 5K and Fun Run supports the award-winning Hoover High School Choir Program, which is made up of more than 180 students in eight different choirs. The money raised helps support all of the Hoover High School Choirs by funding performances, travel, music and other opportunities for students. Their goal this year is to raise $5,000.
“Participants can enjoy live music along the course as Hoover Choir students perform to cheer them on,” said Jessica Prescott, Hoover Choir Booster and Family Living Teacher at R.F. Bumpus Middle School. “Whether running for a personal best or just walking with friends, we'd love everyone in the community to come out to support our students.” Post-race festivities feature karaoke, awards and a silent auction.

The 9th Annual BHM26.2 Race Series is known as Alabama’s only fully charitable race series and is also one of Birmingham’s most highly attended races with more than 2000 runners on average signing up each year. Since its inception, the race has raised over $1 million for Magic Moments, granting wishes for children in Alabama with chronic life-threatening or acute life-altering conditions. In addition to the full marathon, BHM 26.2 features a 5-person marathon relay, half marathon, 10K, 5k and Kid’s Fun Run.
Shelley Anderson, Co-Director of the Alabama Race Series, said the Alabama Race Series was created to bring communities together through running while making a lasting impact for charitable organizations across the state.
“BHM26.2 is our flagship event, but it’s just one part of a larger movement,” Anderson said. “We're creating opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to come together, support meaningful causes, and experience the incredible communities that make Alabama such a special place to run."
