For Daysol Coffee owner Bert Davis, what began as a hobby in Colorado has grown into one of Birmingham's favorite local coffee brands. Now, the Bluff Park coffee shop is giving customers even more reasons to linger with a refreshed interior and a new outdoor seating area designed to bring people together.
Davis first discovered coffee roasting while living in Colorado, where specialty coffee culture inspired him to learn the craft himself. What started with a small home roaster and a few bags sold to friends has evolved into a thriving business that now roasts thousands of pounds of coffee each month.
I started very, very small with three or four bags a month to a few of my friends. Now we do about 200 to 250 bags a week going out of our shop.
After moving to the Birmingham area in 2019 to be closer to family, Davis steadily grew the business, eventually opening the Bluff Park location before launching a flagship roastery and café near Pepper Place. Even with the growth, Bluff Park remains close to his heart.
We love being in Bluff Park. It is our people and our community. I don't see a situation where I ever leave Bluff Park.
The recent renovation was inspired by a desire to create a space that felt more distinctly Daysol while addressing one of the shop's biggest challenges: limited seating. Inside, customers will find fresh paint and a large community table. Outside, two former parking spaces have been transformed into a welcoming patio complete with turf, picnic tables, planters, flowers and umbrellas.
“We wanted to give it a feel that feels like Daysol,” Davis explained.
The response has been immediate. Davis says the new outdoor area is often full, encouraging customers to stay awhile rather than simply grab coffee to go.
When you drive by the shopping center now, you can see almost like a little oasis out there.
As Daysol continues to grow, Davis remains focused on serving the community that has embraced the business from the beginning. For Bluff Park residents, that means a great cup of coffee, and now a few more seats to enjoy it.
