Hoover Met Stadium: A Premier Sports Tourism Destination
The City of Hoover has proudly hosted the SEC Baseball Tournament every year since 1998 (with the exception of 2020, with that season canceled due to the COVID pandemic). Thanks to a strong partnership between the city and the SEC, the tournament is locked in to remain at The Met until at least 2028.
While the stadium officially seats 10,800 for baseball, the addition of patio areas, banquet spaces, and the famous grass berms allows the facility to accommodate over 16,000 fans. Total attendance for the week regularly surpasses 160,000, hitting an all-time record of 180,004 fans in 2024.
A Massive Economic Boost for Hoover
The tournament is a massive win for the local community. In 2025, the economic impact of the event exceeded $17 million. As a premier sports tourism event, it draws thousands of out-of-town visitors who fill up Hoover hotels, pack local restaurants, and shop at retail establishments. This tournament serves as a foundational pillar for the Hoover Met Complex’s annual economic impact, which exceeds $100 million.
Making College Baseball History
The roots of the SEC Baseball Tournament trace back to 1933, when the Southeastern Conference—formed just months prior in December 1932—crowned its first champions. Until 1976, champions were largely determined by regular-season winning percentages and divisional playoffs.
In 1977, the foundation for today’s tournament format was born, and Hoover has proudly served as the home for more than half of its history.
Though historically viewed as a football and basketball conference, the SEC cemented itself as the top collegiate baseball conference by winning six national championships during the 1990s. The dominance has only grown: beginning in 2010, an SEC team has taken home the trophy in 10 out of the last 15 NCAA Baseball Championships.
The FanFest Factor at The Finley Center
Introduced nine years ago, the SEC FanFest has been a total game-changer for engaging families and connecting the SEC community.
In fact, the Finley Center—Hoover’s massive 150,000-square-foot entertainment venue—originally expedited its construction timeline in 2017 just to open its doors in time for the inaugural FanFest.
Located right next to the stadium, this high-energy, indoor event enhances the fan experience with:
Interactive sports attractions and games
Diverse food and beverage options
Live entertainment and music
Free admission with fully open come-and-go access
